The
EU plans to ban ‘normal’ light bulbs, and force everyone to use
‘greener’ energy-saving bulbs instead. What could possibly be wrong
with the EU trying to help the environment a little? Well quite a lot
actually - because energy-saving bulbs DON’T actually help the
environment:
- Energy-saving bulbs actually take up to 10 times as much energy to produce as normal bulbs.
- Energy-saving bulbs don’t cope well with being switched on and off - so for normal household use, they don’t last as much longer as manufacturers claim.
- Energy-saving bulbs use toxic materials such as mercury vapour. In classic EU joined-up thinking, products containing mercury can’t be put into landfill - so throwing away a lightbulb will now be expensive!
- Throwing away up to 1,000,000,000 light bulbs unnecessarily will harm the environment and mean more landfill.
- Energy-saving lightbulbs flicker far more than normal bulbs, making it unsafe to read for extended periods of time with them switched on.
Switching
to energy-saving bulbs will cost Sheffield residents and businesses up
to £30 million, and it won’t help the environment at all.
Jonathan
Arnott said, “This con will cost the average household a lot of money
as we throw away our lightbulbs and rip out our dimmer switches, and
harm the environment at the same time!
Unfortunately,
the UK government now lacks the power to deal with this issue on its
own. We have signed the right to make the decision for ourselves over
to the EU. As with all ‘green’ policy, it really doesn’t matter what
Blair, or Cameron, or Brown think. UK environmental policy is now
determined by the EU.
